Lawn Bowls in USA: History of the Game

The history of lawn bowls in USA dates as far back as the 17th century when the game was brought over to America by British officers. The first bowling green was established in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1632 and still exists today behind Williamsburg Inn.

Various other greens sprang up in the country over the next century and there was even a bowling green established by George Washington’s father at the Mount Vernon estate in 1732. The green – at the front of the mansion – was cut with scythes and smoothed with a roller to keep it tidy.

By the time of the American Revolution (1775 – 1782) lawn bowls more or less died out in the USA. However, it enjoyed a revival after a group of Scottish immigrants restored it in the late 19th century. Word of the game spread and new clubs were founded all over America.

This led to the foundation of the American Lawn Bowls Association in 1915 and in 1928 the USA was admitted to the International Bowling Board, along with Australia, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand.

Lawn Bowls in the USA originally had only male players, but became a mass sport when the game opened up to female players for the first time. This led to the establishment of the American Women’s Lawn Bowls Association in 1970 until they merged with the equivalent men’s organisation in 2000.

There is a set dress code to adhere to for lawn bowls in the USA; although this is much more relaxed compared to that of Britain as players are able to wear either wear white, cream or coloured clothing.

During the US Open, men are required to wear shirts with collars and sleeves and these should be either white or in matching team colours. Women must also wear tops with collars.

Shirts should always be worn in the team’s colour during competitions with clothing below the waist either white, cream or coloured. Pairs teams should wear co-ordinating colours. Women can wear shorts or skirts for competitions and these should be no shorter than three inches above the knee.
